World mental health day

Have you felt isolated by the way people relate to you when you have expressed anxiety or depression?

For many years, mental health has been a taboo. Thankfully, we are becoming more accepting of mental health challenges and empathic towards those who have them. 

The daily challenges that we encounter contribute to the pressures on our health. The good thing however is that it is within our ability to improve our mental well-being with easily implemented tips as listed below.

1. Be aware

To be aware rather than be overwhelmed is a vital key. This is done by practicing mindfulness. It can be done by focusing on our breath or sensations perceived.  Most times, we suggest sitting in a quiet place to minimise distractions. It does not have to be for a long time, 5 mins will do. Improving your wellbeing during the last quarter

There are times when we feel time is racing and this year has not been an exception.

2020 has been a year of intrigue, novelty, uncertainty and for some loss.

However, the fact that you are reading this, is proof that you made it to the last quarter. Yipppeee!!

The last quarter of any year is usually filled with festivities and times when families come together. However, with social distancing and other measures put in place because of the pandemic, there is a risk that we might lose out on many traditions. It is also a time when the cold weather in most countries occur.

Here are a few things that we can do to take control of the last quarter.

1. Keep active

It is cold and you really don't want to go outside. Why no do a mini dance-off with family indoors. It will be fun and you will keep active.

Are you READY?- school resumes

What new chapter is happening in your life? What changes are you making to your daily activities?

When every school resumes, we see a difference in the way everyone's morning routine changes. Traffic is different. You commute is different and maybe your wake up too.

The last few months have been a test of how we are able to adapt to changes with little or no time to plan.

We have learnt to work from home, teach our children, have gatherings online and do pretty much everything. We have so much information and our brain’s processing speed has been put to the test.

Have we stopped to evaluate our emotional bandwidth?

There are times that we pay attention to what is happening around and we do not check up on ourselves.

How much are you drinking?

It is summer!

We are enjoying the warm weather. Schools are on holiday. 

But are we drinking enough fluids?

The human body contains up to 60% of water. On any usual day, we lose about 1L of water. It is usually more on a warm day. This does not include the amount that we pass as urine. We sometimes notice that our urine is darker, which can be an indicator that we are not having enough fluids.

Suggestions for taking 1-2L of water have been made to ensure that our cells are able to function normally. 

Even though water may not be as tasty as fizzy drinks, juices, or alcohol, it is so beneficial. 

Create opportunities to drink water.

Have a refillable bottle with you at all times especially outdoors.

Take a cup of water before every meal.

Put a bottle of water by your bed so that you can take some water as soon as you wake up.
